As Calgary prepares for a new Survivor program in the Fall, we thought we would look at the program through the eyes of some of our readers!

Next Survivor ... Toddlerland

Destination?

“TODDLERLAND” located in many homes.

Description?

Somewhat noisy environment, that alternates between chaotic and utterly fascinating.

Special gates and catches in various parts of the home that only the small people can operate.

Very unusual bathroom accessories, especially the toilet roll shape and tissue holder and various models of potty seats.

Danger for some adults when sitting down on chairs, couches without checking for sticky spots or hard objects!

Inhabitants and Lifestyle?

• One or more little people between the ages of one and three

• Two, sometimes one, sleep deprived adults

• Friendly to family, sometimes hostile to strangers

Fiercely independent, though sorely lacking in social skills

Limited vocabulary but use of body language quite expressive and effective

Emotional extremes seen in both parent and child

Overwhelming charm of Toddlers helps with survival of both parent and child

Meal times somewhat hurried but always interesting

Parents overly pre-occupied with bodily functions most of the time!

Routines necessary but difficult to maintain

Angelic pose when sleeping, guarantees immunity for another day

So how can parents survive Toddlerland?

Laugh more and enjoy the experience, it passes all too quickly

Let go of the things that are not essential to do

Engage the toddlers in some of your activities (turn household chores into fun)

  Play with your toddler

Join groups with others living in the same land and experiencing the same challenges. Sometimes this is encouraging . . . your child’s behavior may seem really good!

Familiarize yourself with normal developmental stages. It’s reassuring to know that this too will pass.

Think ahead. These children will choose your nursing home one day!
