Creative Date Night Ideas

You started week one with dinner, only to talk about vet bills and braces. Next week was a movie, but you couldn’t agree on which flick to see. Running out of ideas, your commitment slipped in week three and you rented a movie after putting the kids to bed. It didn’t take long for date night to become just another boring chore.

It started out as a great enough idea. With a strong desire to let loose and have some fun, you both decided to have a weekly date night without the kids.

Take in some dirty laundryNo, I’m not suggesting a dreary night in a Laundromat. Instead, spend your evening with Dirty Laundry, a local theatre group offering a comical, live and completely improvised soap opera. The actors work with no scripts and are under pressure to make up their lines on the spot. Their witty delivery will have you both laughing all night, which makes this date night a great way for you and your partner to bond. Each unique performance is delivered most Monday evenings in the Lunchbox Theatre space. Tickets are $12 at the door. For dates and times, go to dirtylaundrycalgary.com.

Eat your veggiesIf you do decide on dinner, focus on a unique culinary excursion so the experience distracts you from your daily hassles. Check out Buddha’s Veggie Restaurant, which claims to be Calgary’s first completely Chinese cuisine/vegetarian restaurant. Take a break from steak and make your meal a gastronomic adventure of tantalizing and completely meatless indulgence. Located near Chinook Mall, Buddha’s Veggie offers over 50 Chinese dishes that are so delicious you’ll abandon any previous bovine cravings. Highly recommended are the mixed vegetable won ton soup and the meatless ginger beef. For restaurant hours, visit buddhasveggie.com or call 403-252-8830 for reservations.

Develop your java palateEven if you are a coffee fanatic, waiting in line at the local coffee chain doesn’t qualify as a very creative date night. Instead, become a coffee connoisseur and try a coffee house that takes their bean roasting seriously. The key is to try a new café every week, and enjoy searching for your perfect brew. Check out Phil & Sebastian Coffee Company. Watch their blog (philsebastian.com/blog) for their Marda Loop location opening soon.

Take an in-city vacationThe rare moment will come in your life when the kids are away for the weekend, and your desire to leave town is confined by your bank account. Save your frequent flyer miles for another trip, and splurge on a night in a fancy hotel instead. What about a romantic ‘staycation’ at the historic Palliser Hotel (fairmont.com/Palliser) in downtown Calgary, which offers a great location next to a vibrant nightlife on Stephen Avenue. Or, try Twin Gables Bed and Breakfast (twingables.ca), a historic 1910 mansion located in the prominent community of Mount Royal. After checking in, you can head over to trendy 4th Street SW for an endless choice of restaurants and pubs.
