How about a jazz concert alongside your Saturday morning cartoons and cereal? Even better, what about watching cartoons in the Jack Singer Concert Hall to live music accompaniment?

Since the very beginnings of hand-drawn animation, jazz has been the bouncy, playful, even sometimes suspenseful music behind your favourite cartoons. The Queen’s Cartoonists (named after their borough of origin in New York) celebrate the role of jazz music in over 100 years of animation history around the world by providing a live soundtrack for characters like Betty Boop, Bugs Bunny, The Flintstones and even your favourite wall-crawling superhero. There may even be a few familiar pieces of Canadian animation! Their heartfelt tribute to jazz in animation, combined with comedic anecdotes about the cartoonists and composers, make for an evening of rich entertainment across all generations.

“There’s a lot of stigma against jazz and classical music. There’s this sense of ‘Oh, that’s not for me’ or ‘it’s too complicated’ and I don’t think that’s true. I think we just need the right kind of exposure. You know, cartoons were created introducing classical music to people — everyone learned some Wagner and Rossini from Bugs Bunny and that kind of stuff. So I thought maybe I could do that with musicians and a band.” - Joel Pierson, The Queen’s Cartoonists

“Who needs another Broadway show when you can hire a jazz combo playing music from Bugs Bunny cartoons?” - The Wall Street Journal

“If you watch - and only watch - cartoons, you’re missing something!” - The Chicago Tribune
