Feeling Drab this Winter?

With the most wonderful time of the year and New Year's coming quickly, there are many events going on to get you and your family revved up this Holiday Season.

Olympic Plaza

This year, the City of Calgary is teaming up with CityTV to host the annual New Year's Eve celebration at Olympic Plaza. There will be loads of free entertainment for all ages, live music performances and a guaranteed good time for the whole family.

Live performances include 0talented artists like Johnny Reid, Victoria Duffield and Massari. Don't miss fabulous public art displays and, of course, the tremendous firework show (starting at midnight) to welcome the New Year! Be sure to dress warm that night, but don't let the cold weather scare you away; there will be plenty of warming zones to cozy up to all night. The event takes place on December 31 from 9:30pm to 12:15am at Olympic Plaza downtown. (228 8th Avenue SE)

TELUS Spark, the New Science Centre

TELUS Spark, the New Science Centre, is hosting a family-friendly New Year's Eve event this year. Celebrate the New Year in a warm building with a ton of activities to do, all well before bedtime! This is an incredible new facility that is fun for the whole family. It has two vast floors featuring tons of great hands-on activities, allowing your kids to explore, learn and participate as they say goodbye to 2012! The program starts at noon and continues until close, giving you time to tuck the little ones into bed before you gear up for the late-night festivities. The event takes place on December 31. TELUS Spark is located at 220 St. George's Drive NE.

Zoo Lights

The Calgary Zoo lights are going on until January 5, and if you haven't been yet, I would highly recommend your next night out is to the Zoo! There are 1.5 million Christmas lights on display this year, filling the night sky and your imagination with light.

A special highlight you won't want to miss out on is the Santa Vision; your children can speak directly to Santa in the North Pole! With a live webcam feed, your child can have a one-on-one conversation with Santa himself!

On Friday and Saturday nights, don't miss live Ice Carving demonstrations by Frozen Memories as you're walking through glowing candy canes and passing by sparkling jungles. You will love spending an evening sipping hot chocolate, warming up by fire pits and enjoying the view on a wonderful winter night! The Calgary Zoo is located at 1300 Zoo Road NE.

Canada Olympic Park

Feeling daring this winter? This year, the Canadian Luge Association has teamed up with Canada Olympic Park to offer an exciting opportunity to hop on a sled and try this unique Olympic Sport! This activity is great for daredevils of all ages; kids ages eight and up to participate in the excitement as well. You will receive an introduction to the luge from one of our country's nationally-carded athletes and experience the thrill of this sliding sport on the Olympic track.

You will be driving your own sled after the introduction! Guests will start partway up the track and slide through five turns, reaching speeds up to 60 kilometres per hour. Don't worry, certified helmets are provided along with some extra padding. Book early, as the luge is only available on specific dates. Canada Olympic Park is located at 88 Canada Olympic Road SW.
