A taste of local: Farmers’ markets worth exploring (part 1)

What could be a more fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon than at a local farmers’ market? Fresh produce, local butchers, artisanal cheese, chocolatiers, fresh baking, handicrafts, entertainment, and delicious hot-and-ready lunch options to enjoy while you take a break to relax your feet. And don’t forget the food samples! There is something for everyone, and it is an affordable form of family entertainment to enjoy year-round (while checking off some items from the grocery list at the same time). Looking for somewhere to take out-of-town guests? Farmers’ markets are a wonderful idea.

I am always looking for local markets to hit up when I am travelling.

Calgary and surrounding area has a great selection of farmers’ markets to visit (some open seasonally, and some open year-round). In this article, Iet’s discover:

CROSSROADS MARKET

1235 - 26 Avenue SE

Crosssroads Market has been in business since 1987 and has over 150 different vendors. They are open Fridays through Sundays from 9am to 5pm. and they have a huge, free parking lot. They have vendors that have been at the Crossroads Market for over 30 years! At Crossroads Market, you can find everything from clothing to antiques, jewellery, gems, soaps, and obviously a ton of food vendors, as well as fresh produce and meat. And if you’re looking for entertainment while you’re there, the Loose Moose Theatre Company has their children’s shows every Saturday at 1pm, and every Sunday at 1pm and 3pm. It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon at Crossroads!

Here is a just a small sampling of some of Crossroads Market’s amazing vendors:

Friends & Gems Inc.

Friends & Gems Inc. specializes in gemstones, jewellery, oracle cards, incense, and more, with a wide variety of tools that support mindfulness and personal well-being. Created with the idea that people should have access to natural minerals and spiritual tools that encourage reflecting, balance, and positive energy, it’s easy to pass the time at this location admiring the beautiful crystals and learning about all of the different stones and gems. You can even enjoy an angel card reading during your day at the Market with one of their certified practitioners.

A & B Fiberworks

Want another colorful experience at the Crossroads Market? Visit A & B Fiberworks! It’s a beautiful rainbow display of yarn. The owner, Anne Goodwin, is an alpaca and sheep farmer near Linden, Alberta, and has her own fibre mill where she processes the animal fibre to create these beautiful yarns for purchase. She carries yarn from other Canadian suppliers for purchase as well. A long-time hand spinner and weaver, Anne also carries spinning, weaving and felting equipment and supplies. Anne is happy to assist with any questions that you may have with your own handicraft products, so stop by for a chat. It is definitely worth a visit to admire all of the colorful yarns and material for sale at A & B.

Starbuko Grill

Enjoy some Filipino fusion with Chef Marlon! Chef Marlon’s passion for cooking is fuelled by memories of cooking with his father in the Philippines. His fondest memories are of feeding the farmers on his family’s rice fields. The satisfied faces of the farmers while enjoying his father’s cooking inspired him to carry on his father’s talent in the kitchen. Come and enjoy Chef Marlon’s version of the Filipino breakfast dish, Tapsilog, which consists of tapa (beef), sinangag (garlic fried rice), and itlog (fried egg). Now that’s comfort food that will fuel you a full day at the Market!

There are so many other great places to explore and shop at while you’re at Crossroads. Sharing a Borek (fried filled pastry) from Anatolia Turkish Cuisine will leave your mouth watering, the German sausage from Old Munich German Sausage House will leave you reminiscing about pocket dawgs at the ball diamond from when you were a kid, and you must explore all of the peanut butter and jelly offerings at PB & J. Wash that all down with a fresh-pressed cold juice from Brim Juicery (freshly pressed daily) or one of my favorite London Fogs from Market Tea. And don’t forget to to stop by Chongo’s Market for some fresh produce for dinner tonight, and to grab some cheese at Say Cheese Fromagerie – they’re too Gouda to be true!

There are so many more delicious and fun vendors at Crossroads Market – go explore! It truly is an adventure for the senses!
