Festivals & Activities 

The first item on the agenda for 2024 is a Discover Scavenger Hunt – which will be launched in mid-January for the first time. This will be free to join, with missions to complete every week to win prizes. Next is a Lunar New Year Festival that takes place in Chinatown every year. Chinatown will be alive with lots of activities for the entire family over two weekends with a Lion Dance outside on February 10. Be sure to come out and enjoy the activities and fun, shop the stores, and discover more of Chinatown.

Cultural Explorations

Calgary Chinatown offers numerous opportunities for families to delve into Chinese culture. The August Street Festival is a fantastic place to start. This annual event, held in August, transforms the streets into a colorful carnival of cultural displays, live performances, and interactive exhibits. Families can enjoy the traditional Dragon and Lion Dances, watch martial arts demonstrations, and even try their hand at various cultural activities.

For those who prefer a more tranquil cultural experience, the September Lantern Festival awaits. This festival, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival, fills the night sky with the soft glow of colorful lanterns. Families can enjoy and join lantern-making activities, food trucks, and entertainment. The lanterns create a magical atmosphere that is sure to captivate all ages.

 

Culinary Delights

From the aromatic dim sum and savory Peking duck, to spicy Sichuan hot pot and noodles, there's a dish for every palate.  

Some suggestions include U & Me Restaurant – where you can order many different dim sum dishes, main courses, and late-night delights as they are open until the early morning hours. Hi Tea in the Dragon City Mall, located at the corner of Centre Street and 4 Avenue SE, offers a great variety of street food like bubble waffles, chicken wings, fries, and of course the famous bubble tea in a variety of flavors.

For additional fun, check out the Qalala candy store in the Dragon City Mall for a variety of candy, mostly imported from Japan and Hong Kong. While in the mall, be sure to check out Honey World, a toy store located on the main floor that features a great variety of toys and stationery for young kids.
