For many kids, ‘back to school’ has always been a fun day full of anticipation, curiosity and excitement. Some want to show off their new look or see how others have grown and matured during the summer. However, due to the current economy, many children will be starting their first day of school wearing the same clothes that they wore on the last day of school this past year. They might be living at a different address, because their parents might not have been able to keep up with the expenses of their former home. Their family structure might have changed. Now they may live with only one parent due to a divorce, maybe they have to live with relatives because of finances or maybe even they’re now in foster care.
For some of us, saying goodbye to summer is not easy. No more lazy, non-scheduled days, lounging in our PJs all morning or spending the afternoon at the beach building sandcastles. While some of us look forward to having a routine again, mornings before school can get hectic. Getting the kids out of bed, dressed, fed and packed up and out the door on time can be stressful. Take a look at a few organizational tips to help you and your family avoid the back-to-school frenzy.
Share your expertise. Kids spend 70 per cent of their time outside of school and you are an expert on your child. Early in the term, fill the teacher in on your child’s strengths and interests, personality patterns and specific learning challenges. When you help the teacher connect with your child, you set everyone up for success.
